Conway Tardis Hard Top Folding Camper
(Sleeping Capacity 6 persons)

Conway Tardis Overview
This is a 1986 folding hard topped
camper made by Conway. We bought this as a cheap
"folding camper" to try out the concept of folding
campers compared to a caravan. Well its a pop up really
as the roof is raised by winding up the hard top to
unfold the canvas to make taught walls. But the "type"
fits into the general description of folding camper,
having a caravan type lower portion and soft walls,
canvas in this case. The unit, some 22 years old when we
got it, whilst in very good condition did have an aged
look inside with a dull dark carpet and old fashion
curtains. We set out to spend no more than £100 in
giving it a freshen up so replaced the carpet and made
new curtains. It was never going to look like a modern
unit but now looks a bit less dated than it did and we
are pleased with it.
The unit has two double bed that
slide out from the front and back and a third that can
be made up from the seating in the living area. Spacious
it is and you can see where the name Tardis came from.
As the two double beds slide out of the trailer they
take no room off the main trailer floor area leaving it
for the dinning / seating area sink unit and hob, a full
run of cupboard units and a fold down wardrobe.
Facilities are basic, 240volt sockets and 12 volt
sockets are provided, electric water pump, sink and hob
and that's about it. No toilet or shower, no hot water
and no heating. We have used a small electric blow air
heater and boil a kettle for hot water and find no great
problem. Whilst we have purchased a porta loo the
absence of a toilet / shower compartment is what we miss
most. A more modern version of the hard top from Conway,
the Conway Cardinal had the addition of the toilet in
the newer versions.

The Cost
These units are getting on in years and the cost
will very much depend on the condition and how they
have been looked after.
Expect to pay from around £400 - £1500 for a usable
unit and look out for the extras such as awnings and
additional equipment that may be included in the
deal
The Verdict
We like it and think a unit like this
in good condition could have many years left in it.
Looking forward to many more holidays away in it. A good
buy we think, time will tell.
