Brief History Of The Making Of The Tear Pod

After researching several different methods of construction such as sheet material – i.e. metal, plywood, composite boards etc, I decided fibreglass would be the most suitable material because of its strong, durable, versatile and weatherproof qualities.
Firstly I had to build a plug which was shaped as though it would be the finished article. For the construction of this plug, I used nearly all recycled products such as wood, waterpipe, perspex, plaster and bodyfiller. After weeks and weeks of sanding and polishing I was finally happy with the shape and finish. I then enlisted the help of my nephew who himself is a laminator for the renowned Sunseekers Power Boats of Poole and two weeks later, the Tearpod was born. All the work so far had been done in my double garage at home but conveniently a large workshop came up for rent locally and so we moved into our new premises in July 2006. Thinking the hard work was done, we took things at a steady pace not wanting to rush the construction however I couldn’t have been more wrong. Decisions and designs for the chassis, tailgate, galley, access door and mudguards etc, etc had to be made and the majority of my evenings were spent researching and sourcing components on the internet. Christmas came and went, bank balances deflated and then tragedy struck. On 1st July 2007 my son was killed on railway lines and from that point onwards, production ground to a halt. After a long break we are now ready to produce the Tearpod to order.

The Tearpod Is Born And Ready For The Market
Description

The Tearpod can sleep 2 adults, 3 if your good friends and can be produced in a range of different colours to suit the users taste.
The exterior of the pod incorporates custom made wheel arches/fenders covering 12” alloy wheels. At the front there is a custom made swan neck detachable drawer bar which is made from 76mm tubing which has been powder coated. We chose this design because it gave the front of the Tearpod a clean, sleek finish. The exterior also features stainless steel tailgate hinges and stainless steel louvered vents, only adding to this sleek finish. We have also fitted a solar vent situated on the top of the pod. At the rear, we have a custom made panel incorporating five function lights and the number plate, and the underside of the pod is completely sealed with no chassis showing. This construction technique is called monocoque and therefore the Tearpod in theory, could go to sea. (Although this has not been tested yet!). Access can be gained to the cabin either side via D shaped doors. The interior cabin has two single 5 fold breathable mattresses which form either a double bed or alternatively they fold forwards to create seating.
Once these mattresses are folded forward, access to the under floor storage and charge system can be gained. The charge system comprises of a 20amp – 3 outlet smart charge power supply. This compartment also houses the amplifier for the AV and mains hook-up trip switch. The interior is lit by LED ceiling lights providing adequate lighting and the ceiling and walls are covered in leatherette making them wipe clean. The addition of foam lining to the walls makes the interior an even more user friendly space.

At present there is an eyelevel panel which has a drop down shelf for the provision of a laptop with storage cupboards either side. There is also a facility for plug ‘n’ play for audio such as Ipod, MP3 or music Mobile with volume control and switching from cabin to galley speakers. To the rear of the Tearpod is the galley. This is accessed by key fob remote which elevates the tailgate. Inside the galley there is a waist height worktop area with a glass and stainless steel combination 2 burner hob and sink unit with fold down tap. There is also adequate storage directly behind two sliding doors with shelf above. There are two waterproof speakers to the side panels and below waist height there is additional storage accessed via a hinged door. This area gives access to the water storage. The galley area has plenty of lighting, again lit be LED lights lighting the overhead tailgate and the entire galley surfaces are wipe clean to ensure cleanliness. When stood inside the galley area, you will realise the unique design of the tailgate as it gives protection from the elements and can be raised or lowered to suit the user. This feature alone is unlike any other Teardrop caravan/trailer.
