The Hard
Top Folding Camper ( Pup )
When is a
folding camper not a folding camper. That's easy, when
its a pop up. Very similar to the conventional folding
camper in that the bottom half of the unit sits on a
caravan like chassis with a trailer often looking much
like the bottom half of a caravan. The sides above the
trailer being made of a material. The main difference
being that a pop up generally has a hard flat top and a
true folding camper has a top made from material (canvas
like in most cases).
So what the
benefits and drawbacks
of a pop up camper
Benefits Over A Conventional
Caravan
It shares many of the
benefits that
a true folding camper has, easier to tow than a caravan,
can generally be stored in the garage, better fuel
economy, cheaper to buy when you can find them in the UK.
Drawbacks Over A Conventional
Caravan
Sound and thermal insulation are
generally not as good due to soft walls. The unit has to
be wound up (popped up) before it can be used

Manufacturers Of The Hard Top In The UK
Conway, were one of the biggest
producers of Pop Up Campers in the UK and many of
there older models can still be found on sites
around the UK. The Conway Laser and Conway Tardis
were very popular models and later the Conway
Cardinal emerged as a more streamline progression
from the Tardis. Some of the later models of the
Conway Cardinal were fitted with a toilet
compartment
Whilst many other manufacturers
continue to make the pop up across the world
production in the UK seems to have shifted in favour
of the true folding camper (not hard top) However
many old and new imports still feature in the UK
market. Canadian Bonair units are still quite
popular and well built units, however many in the UK
are beginning to show their age. Coleman, units can
also be found dating back many years, taken over by
Fleetwood who continue production in America. More rare in
the UK are units from the Duch company Paradisio,
but they are there to be found for those who care to
look.
